TOWN AND GOWN THEATER
Town and Gown Theater is a local community theater that invited myself and my classmates to create renovation proposals for the backstage areas of their existing theater. We toured the site and individually composed a design concept and a design in which it was manifested. I was inspired by 17th century England and Shakespearean theater. I drew my color palette from Elizabethan prints and engravings of black ink on timeworn parchment.
The makeup room evokes an ancient cathedral with arches and a glittering ceiling. I wanted this small room to be like a jewel box. Because it is such a small, vernacular room, it has a tendency to be overlooked. By adding ironwork and a coffered ceiling with gold leaf, I have heightened the drama of the space and made it the focal point.
The green room provides plenty of seating and task lighting for reviewing scripts. I specified a sisal carpet tile for the flooring that is durable and easily replaced if damaged.
